Apartment Birding

So when life give you lemon's you are supposed to make lemonade, so since I do love lemonade, I thought I'd try some apartment birding to see if I can attract any birds to my deck.

So I found one of my teacup feeders that I made and filled it with bird food. 
I placed it on a table on my deck, and I also purchased a Finch sock filled with Nyjer seed and hung it over my railing.

So, as you can see no nearby trees for the birds to hide in so not sure if I will get any takers on my bird feeders, but a girl can try.



So I have a perfect view of the feeders from my living room and from my kitchen window.  I will let you know if any of our feathered friends stop by for a bite.

Where oh where have the birder's gone???

I must say it has been much too long since San and I have not only gone birding but also a long time since we've blogged about it.

Our 'Birding Mission Statement' clearly says that the blog was to help us spend quality time together doing something we both love to do and that is bird watching.

As everyone knows my life has been topsy turvy for the past 3 years so I know I must take my share of the blame for not having the time to get together.

San and I have allowed life to get in the way of what we love to do.  We just so happen to have a calling (hobby) for something that requires time and usually it has to be a specific time if you want to see the birds when they are most likely to be there.

So now that I live in an apartment complex I no longer have any bird feeders to invite the birds to me so this especially will call for an concerted effort on my part if I want to see any birds.  It was very hard for me to give away all my bird feeders to fellow birders but at least they are all being put to use.

I saved one Hummingbird feeder that I will attempt to hang on my deck this summer, but it is not likely they will come this close to population but a girl can dream.

So San let's officially make 2014 the year of the Bird.  See you out there!

"Don't Cross This Crow!" aka "Watch Your Back!"

First of all, let me apologize for our long absence.  It's been a long winter for my birding buddy and myself.  Now that spring is in the air, we hope to post more regularly.

I couldn't resist sharing this story with our readers. My girlfriend went to Lake Placid last week with her family and some friends.  The Inn they stayed at also housed some foxes, owls, and other wildlife in need of some care.

This vacationing group came in contact with a curious crow. 

He appeared to have no fear of humans.  Maybe he was a recipient of the kindness of the innkeepers.  He would come and land on your outstretched arm.  How sweet!!  The only problem was that this friendly crow had a strange way of making friends.  Perhaps he was a middle child/bird and had to fight to get attention.  Or perhaps he suffered with some sort of insecurity complex or anxiety disorder. 

In any case, he tried warming up to these friends by pecking on the head of little Silas!  All that got him was a shooshing away.  Then he tried a love peck on the neck of Norbert.  That wasn't too endearing, especially since it drew blood!  He proceeded to perch nearby, but this only served to intimidate!  It sure is hard making friends!

Fearless Mark decided to capture "the love" on video.  Way to go!!!
